Let $X$ be a Hilbert space of functions equipped with a norm and inner product. A functional $J$ is a mapping from $X$ to $\mathbb{R}$. We denote its dependence on a function $f\in X$ as $J[f]$, and its action on $f$ as $J(f)$.
